I-39/90 Six-Lane Expansion, Dane/Rock County Line to USH 12/18, Dane County, WI
OES engineers are part of a joint venture team preparing plans and specifications for the high-profile $230 million expansion of I39/90 between Madison and the Dane/Rock County line. This project will reconstruct approximately 22 miles of the existing I39/90 freeway lanes and will add a third lane in each direction to create a six-lane divided interstate. It includes the reconstruction of four interchanges and many bridges. OES engineers developed five alternatives to improve the design speed and capacity of the Beltline Interchange, which serves as the gateway entrance to the City of Madison. A “turbine interchange,” which would be only the second in the US, is one of the considered alternatives. Complex constructability analysis and cost estimates were completed and presented to WisDOT and FHWA, resulting in the selection of a preferred alternative and final design. In addition, OES engineers completed the design of a segment of the I-39/90 mainline and the USH 51 service interchange.
OES staff are also providing high level project management, corridor team/controls reporting, FWHA oversight compliance, survey, constructability reviews, complex traffic control staging involving temporary structures and roadways, public involvement, agency coordination, right-of- way plat, and complex interstate/interchange design using Civil 3D. OES engineers are designing the CTH AB overpass replacement and the widening of four structures along I-39/90 at CTH B, CTH W, Siggelkow Road, and Drotning Road.
